【摘要】:Drydensity,asdefinedasx201C;densityofsoilorrockx201D;inTerminologyD653andx201C;bulkdensityx201D;bysoilscientists,canbeusedtoconvertthewaterfractionofsoilfromamassbasistoavolumebasisandvise-versa.Whenparticledensity,thatis,specificgravity(TestMethodsD854)isalsoknown,drydensitycanbeusedtocalculateporosityandvoidratio(seeAppendixX1).Drydensitymeasurementsarealsousefulfordeterminingdegreeofsoilcompaction.Sincemoisturecontentisvariable,moistsoildensityprovideslittleusefulinformationexcepttoestimatetheweightofsoilperunitvolume,forexample,poundspercubicyard,atthetimeofsampling.Sincesoilvolumeshrinkswithdryingofswellingsoils,bulkdensitywillvarywithmoisturecontent.Hence,thewatercontentofthesoilshouldbedeterminedatthetimeofsampling.Densities(unitweights)ofremolded/reconstitutedspecimensarecommonlyusedtoevaluatethedegreeofcompactionofearthenfills,embankments,etc.Drydensityvaluesareusuallyusedinconjunctionwithcompactioncurvevalues(TestMethodsD698andD1557).Density(unitweight)isoneofthekeycomponentsindeterminingthemasscomposition/phaserelationsofsoil,seeAppendixX1.Note18212;Thequalityoftheresultproducedbythisstandardisdependentonthecompetenceofthepersonnelperformingitandthesuitabilityoftheequipmentandfacilitiesused.AgenciesthatmeetthecriteriaofPracticeD3740aregenerallyconsideredcapableofcompetentandobjectivetesting/sampling/inspection/etc.UsersofthisstandardarecautionedthatcompliancewithPracticeD3740doesnotinitselfassurereliableresults.Reliableresultsdependonseveralfactors;PracticeD3740providesameansofevaluatingsomeofthesefactors.1.1Thesetestmethodsdescribetwowaysofdeterminingthetotal/moistanddrydensities(unitweights)ofintact,disturbed,remolded,andreconstituted(compacted)soilspecimens.Density(unitweight)asusedinthisstandardmeansthesameasx201C;bulkdensityx201D;ofsoilasdefinedbytheSoilScienceSocietyofAmerica.Intactspecimensmaybeobtainedfromthin-walledsamplingtubes,blocksamples,orclods.Specimensthatareremoldedbydynamicorstaticcompactionproceduresmayalsobemeasuredbythesemethods.Thesemethodsapplytosoilsthatwillretaintheirshapeduringthemeasurementprocessandmayalsoapplytoothermaterialssuchassoil-cement,soil-lime,soil-bentoniteorsolidifiedsoil-bentonite-cementslurries.Itiscommonforthedensity(unitweight)ofspecimensafterremovalfromsamplingtubesandcompactionmoldstobelessthanthevaluebasedontubeormoldvolumes,orofin-situconditions.Thisisduetothespecimenswellingafterremovaloflateralpressures.1.1.1MethodAcoverstheprocedureformeasuringthevolumeofwaxcoatedspecimensbydeterminingthequantityofwaterdisplaced.1.1.1.1Thismethodonlyappliestospecimensinwhichthewaxwillnotpenetratetheoutersurfaceofthespecimen.1.1.2MethodBcoverstheprocedurebymeansofthedirectmeasurementofthedimensionsandmassofaspecimen,usuallyoneofcylindricalshape.Intactandreconstituted/remoldedspecimensmaybetestedbythismethodinconjunctionwithstrength,permeability(air/water)andcompressibilitydeterminations.1.2ThevaluesstatedinSIunitsare......
